Acala, “the Immovable One,” is a wrathful deity in esoteric Buddhist art, known in Japan as Fudo Myoo. His familiar sword and lasso express the cutting of ignorance and the subduing of obstacles. The fierce appearance conveys steadfast resolve in facing obstacles.
Traditional context and devotional practice
Acala is associated with aspirations for resolve, fearlessness and perseverance through obstacles, giving visual form to courage and steadiness in difficulty.
This painting
Black-and-white linework defines Acala, the sword and lasso, while a golden dragon threads through the composition. The dragon's movement complements the forceful figure, giving this work a distinctive character beside the polychrome and gold-ground paintings.
