What is a polychrome thangka?
In a polychrome painting, several colours work together to distinguish the principal figure from its setting. Warm and cool passages, pale petals and darker contours create depth around the face, garments and lotus seat. Fine gold-painted details add another layer within the coloured scene.
A complete scene, painted small
Vairocana sits at the centre of a lotus-throne composition, held together by the hand gesture, halo and ornament. In the blue-lion Manjushri, the animal, clouds and flowers introduce movement. Miniature brushwork has to keep these layers distinct within a 4 × 5 cm image, giving each subject its own character.
Colour to wear and collect
These hand-painted works use natural mineral pigments and genuine 24K gold details. A Gau box houses the painted image, and an included cord makes it wearable as a miniature thangka pendant. The coloured composition remains an individual painting, whether worn or kept in a collection.
