In this story

A painting can begin with a figure you admire, a memory you want to honour or simply an image you have not yet found. At Himalaya Surprise, we offer a complete thangka commission service, with one-to-one conversation and a record of the making process. We help you develop the subject, composition and presentation into a work that reflects what matters to you.

A commission shaped around you

You do not need to arrive with a finished design. Tell us what you would like the work to express, where you hope to keep it and what first drew you to thangka painting. We can begin with an exact subject and reference, or help you explore the direction in a personal conversation. The service follows the whole project, from the first idea and agreed brief through creation, final presentation and delivery arrangements.

If you already have exacting requirements, bring them into the conversation early. A particular expression, arrangement of figures, density of detail or balance of colour deserves attention before work begins. We take the time to understand these choices and develop an agreed direction, rather than asking you to fit your idea into a standard image.

Find the subject and the visual direction

The principal figure is only the beginning. Posture, gestures, attributes, surrounding figures and setting give the image its character. We can discuss the subject you want, the details you would like to retain and the atmosphere you have in mind. A reference photograph, a few images or a short description can each be a useful starting point; references are welcome, not a prerequisite.

A traditional subject may have more than one recognised form. We clarify the form alongside the composition so that personal choices work with the image, rather than obscuring it. If you have a practice-specific reference, share it with us. The first question can be as simple as “I would like a Manjushri painting, but I am still deciding between a seated figure and one riding a lion.”

Line, colour and the character of a work

Our collection offers concrete points of reference. In the Manjushri on a Blue Lion shown above, the richly coloured figure, flowers and moving lion create a lively setting. In the sword-bearing wrathful figure shown here, black-and-white linework makes the figure and sword clear, while the golden dragon carries movement through the composition. These are different ways of organising attention, not simply different background colours.

If one of these approaches appeals to you, tell us what caught your eye: the fine outlines, the quieter palette, the sense of movement or the density of the surrounding detail. We can use that conversation to develop your commission’s visual direction. View the Sword-Bearing Wrathful Deity with Golden Dragon.

Choose the scale and the presentation together

Size changes the experience of a painting. The three collection works illustrated on this page each have a painted image of 4 × 5 cm; their gau housings add to the outside dimensions. The Vajrasattva here shows how flowers, layered colour and small attributes can be brought together at that miniature scale. View the Vajrasattva work.

For your commission, we discuss the image size and its presentation as one decision. Tell us whether you are imagining something personal and portable, a work for a room or a gift with a particular setting in mind. We can work through the composition, dimensions and finishing options together. The collection photographs are references to finished works; the scope and price of a new commission are discussed separately.

Follow the work as it takes shape

A personal commission should give you a connection to the making, as well as to the finished image. We record the creation process and share its development with you. The agreed subject and composition, drawing, painting and finished presentation become part of a continuing account of your work, rather than disappearing once the final photograph is sent.

Our one-to-one conversations continue as the work develops. We agree the useful points for reviewing the drawing and later progress, so that questions can be discussed while they still help the painting. Changes to a figure, colour direction or surrounding scene can affect the work at different stages; we explain those choices with you and keep the agreed decisions together with the progress record.

A quote for the work you have in mind

A commission is priced around its subject, size, composition, detail and presentation. Share a budget if you have one, and tell us about any date that matters to you. We can then discuss a suitable scope, the quotation and the expected schedule. A detailed multi-figure composition and a quieter single figure may ask for very different amounts of work, even at a similar size.

We discuss the painting, finishing, delivery arrangements and payment terms with the brief, so that you know what is included before proceeding. There is no need to choose a generic price tier first. The prices shown with the finished works on this page are collection prices, not a starting fee or quotation for your commission. Our thangka price guide gives more context for differences between works.

Give the details the attention they deserve

A demanding brief is welcome. The expression of the face, the clarity of the hands and attributes, the balance of the composition and the handling of fine lines all contribute to a convincing painting. We discuss the qualities you care about and carry them into the work’s review points. A high standard becomes useful when it is expressed through details we can see and talk about.

The progress record also lets you look back at how the image developed: a drawing becoming colour, details being resolved and the work arriving at its final presentation. It can be a meaningful companion to a personal gift or a painting you have chosen to live with. Your idea remains part of the story of its making.

Let us begin with your idea

A first message can be brief: “I would like to commission a Manjushri thangka. I am drawn to the colours and lion in TG-021, and I would like to discuss a personal composition and size. Could we talk about the options, process record, price and timing?” If you are still finding the subject, that is a good place to begin too.

Email us or start a WhatsApp conversation below. A reference image, an idea or a few questions are enough for the first exchange. We will help you turn that starting point into a clear direction for your thangka.
