Manjushri is the bodhisattva of wisdom in Mahayana Buddhism. His sword represents wisdom cutting through ignorance, while the scripture on a lotus embodies the teachings on perfected wisdom. In Chinese Buddhist art, he is also frequently shown riding a lion.

Manjushri is associated with aspirations for learning, clear thought and sound judgement: wisdom expressed through both insight and action.
