How to Choose a Dzi Bead
A distinctive pattern draws you in. Proportion, detail and a comfortable fit make a bead your own.
Start with the bead itself: the contrast of its markings, the shape of its body and the way the pattern wraps around it. A simple banded design can be just as compelling as a densely patterned one. Choosing well is about finding a combination you enjoy, rather than collecting the largest number of eyes.
Look at the whole pattern
Compare the spacing of the rings, the width of the bands and the balance between light and dark. Look at every available view: a curved bead shows a different part of its design as it turns. Eye-count names describe a pattern; the full arrangement tells you much more about its visual character.
Choose the proportions you want to wear
Check the listed length and width together. A long, slim bead and a short, broad bead can occupy a similar area in a photograph while sitting very differently on a cord. Use a ruler to picture the dimensions against your clothing. For a pendant, consider both the bead’s orientation and the length of the cord.
Understand the individual piece
Read the material description alongside the photographs. Surface texture, the edges of the holes and the finish all deserve attention. For a historical piece, provenance and specialist assessment matter: a photograph or a home test cannot establish age or authenticity. For everyday wear, concentrate on the documented material, condition and assembly that suit your plans.
Finish with the cord
A plain cord lets the bead remain the focus; a contrasting cord brings out its shape. Before wearing, check that the cord sits smoothly through the opening and the fastening is secure. The best choice brings together a pattern you enjoy, proportions you like and a practical way to wear it.
