How to Care for a Dzi Bead
A soft cloth, a secure cord and a place of its own: good care begins with simple habits.
Care for the whole piece, not only the bead. A cord, clasp or neighbouring bead may need different treatment from the stone itself. A gentle routine keeps the surface clean while giving you a regular opportunity to check how the piece is assembled.
Wipe gently after wearing
Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to lift away fingerprints and everyday dust. Work gently around the holes and fittings. If more cleaning is needed, follow the instructions for the individual material and assembly; a lightly damp cloth may be suitable for some pieces, followed by careful drying. Keep the cord dry and let it air fully before storage.
Make dressing part of the routine
Put the bead on after applying perfume, lotion or other cosmetics. Take it off for swimming, bathing, sport and tasks that could knock it against a hard surface. Keep it away from strong heat and household cleaning products. For routine care, a cloth is preferable to ultrasonic or steam cleaning, especially when a bead’s treatment or fittings are not fully known.
Check the cord and fastening
Look for fraying where the cord passes through the bead, and gently check the knots or clasp before putting it on. Replace a worn cord promptly. A secure attachment lets you enjoy the piece comfortably without placing unnecessary stress on the opening or fittings.
Give it a separate place
Store the dry piece in a soft pouch or a lined compartment, away from other jewellery that could rub against it. Lay the cord loosely rather than pulling it tight. Keep any material or care information with your records so that future cleaning or restringing can be matched to the piece.
